General surgery is not “general” at all. In fact, it’s a specialty area of medicine. General surgeons complete a residency or specialty in surgery that is five years or longer. They are trained to do surgery on all parts of the body.
General surgeons can do many different types of procedures. Suzanne Jones, MD, and Jennifer Kulick, MD, board-certified general surgeons with Chelsea Surgical Associates, said general surgeons can help a wide variety of patients with many different concerns.
“Some of the typical procedures done by our practice are colorectal, thyroid, and breast surgery; minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins, gastrointestinal disease, and hernias; endoscopy services; and skin cancer surgery,” said Dr. Jones. “That’s just the short list of things we can do. Many people don’t know what a general surgeon can do for them until they are referred to one by their doctor.”
“Recommendations from your physician, as well as feedback from family and friends who have used a surgeon, can be very helpful,” said Dr. Kulick. “It’s also a good idea to look at credentials. After completing a residency in general surgery, the surgeon is considered Board-Eligible. To become Board-Certified, the surgeon must then take—and pass—stringent oral and written exams in his or her medical specialty.”
Dr. Jones added that it’s very important to choose a surgeon with whom you can ask questions and discuss your concerns.
“The best way to put your mind at ease before any procedure is to know all the facts about what’s being done,” Dr. Jones said. “A good surgeon will want to know about your fears and questions. It helps us to provide you with the best possible care.”
