The Healthy Communities Walking Program
is underway in the three communities of Chelsea, Dexter and Manchester, Michigan. The Walking Program is designed to involve people of all activity levels in a structured, measurable, outcome-based exercise regime.

WHO WE ARE
Healthy Communities is a Chelsea, Dexter, Manchester initiative that is serving as a catalyst for implementing community-based programs. The programs are designed to form partnerships with the schools, churches, businesses, and civic organizations.

WHAT WE'RE DOING
The goal of Healthy Communities is to reduce the occurrence of preventable chronic diseases, particularly those that are associated with being overweight, by assisting the residents of the communities in the pursuit of physical activity and healthy eating.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT
Healthy Communities was launched in response to a 2000 survey sponsored by Washtenaw County Health Improvement Plan. The survey results showed that residents of Chelsea, Dexter and Manchester are more overweight and have, by some measures, poorer nutritional habits than the county as a whole.
