Expert Care for Women's Cancers
Cancers of the female genital tract require specialized treatment. St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) serves as the primary practice site for one of only 13 Board-Certified Gynecologic Oncologists in the state of Michigan.
With this expertise, SJMO is able to provide a full array of services for women with cancer, as well as women with complex gynecological diagnoses. We are committed to offering rapid turnaround by getting referred patients into the office promptly, determining the best treatment course and quickly starting treatment.
The Michigan Cancer Institute (MCI) at SJMO is devoted to the comprehensive care and management of women with gynecologic cancers of the ovary, endometrium, uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva. The service was developed to provide continuing consultation and counseling for patients for gynecological cancers. These specialized services provide cancer screening, early diagnosis, surgery and follow-up management.
MCI is located in the Alice Gustafson Ambulatory Surgery Center on the SJMO campus.
Gynecologic oncology brings together the expertise of a multidisciplinary team of health professionals to coordinate the best possible treatment individualized for each patient. Our collective team of experts works together to provide a team planning approach via a tumor board review. A tumor board review includes a number of doctors who are specialists in other disciplines, such as radiation oncology and medical oncology, who review and discuss the medical condition and treatment options for a patient in cancer treatment while preserving quality of life. This unique model of care provides state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The SJMO team together delivers expert treatment that remains true to our mission and treats the whole patient-body, mind and spirit.
We also partner with each patient's personal physician to keep him/her informed of treatment progression.
Michael L. Hicks, MD, FACOB, is the Medical Director of the SJMO gynecologic oncology team. He is a board-certified gynecologic oncologist who is on the cutting-edge of treatment methods and care. Other members of the team include specialized nurse practitioners, oncology certified (OCN) nurses, gyn. surgical-nurse coordinators, cancer research nurses and support staff.
