Construction Updates

Parking/Traffic Information for Patients and Visitors

Please check this page for up-to-date information on parking or traffic flow changes as we begin construction on our facility. We will be posting regular updates here as any changes occur on our campus.

Please be assured that ALL services, including our 24-hour emergency room, will be open as usual throughout the duration of our construction project. Our health care services will not be interrupted in any way. Our high-quality service to our patients and their families remains unchanged as we build a new, state-of-the-art facility for you.

A portion of the internal main Hospital drive (Will Johnson Drive) is closed. Traffic is being re-routed around the closure. All campus entrances remain open during this time. Additional signage is in place to assist our patients and visitors with wayfinding during the closure. Plenty of close parking remains available to our patients and visitors. We apologize for any inconvenience.

From the north, you may use the Hospital's north entrance.

From the east, you may use the Wellness Center entrance. From the south and west, you may use the Hospital's south main street entrance. Using any of the three entrances will require you to drive through the west parking lot to access the north drive as you are detoured around the closure.

Background Information on our Construction Project:

Growing for You - February 2012

Although things look very different on the Chelsea Community Hospital campus, the work is a reminder of the exciting changes in process.

The construction project, the largest that CCH has ever undertaken, will be completed later this year. This multi-phased project includes a new 54-bed addition which will make all the Hospital’s rooms private, as well as new and expanded Emergency Room, X-ray/imaging areas, Outpatient rehab/therapy, and new Main Entrance which will include a café, gift shop and meeting rooms.

Those passing by the construction can see the building taking shape. The brick exterior is completed in several areas, as well as the structural steel, concrete flooring, and roofing. The final below grade wall was installed last month, allowing for the remainder of the structural steel to be erected. Work has also started outside the administrative and former lab entrance in preparation for the connecting corridor to the surgery building.

In 2013, CCH will begin renovations and an addition to the Hospital for a comprehensive Cancer Center that will include radiation oncology. The Hospital opened its new Infusion Center in November 2010, and the Cancer Center will allow CCH to expand upon those services and provide a full spectrum of cancer care, close to home.

All health care services remain uninterrupted throughout the duration of this construction project. In addition, the Hospital is working closely with the construction management team to minimize any inconvenience to patients and visitors. Plenty of close, convenient parking is available near the Main Entrance, Emergency Room, and Surgery Center.

CCH patients and their families remain our priority, throughout this project and beyond.

Chelsea Hospital Breaks Ground - March 2011

Chelsea Community Hospital broke ground for its new facility on Tuesday, March 22, with a packed tent of nearly 180 attendees, and much excitement from Hospital and community leaders.

The Hospital is building a two-story addition, including a 54 new beds which will make all the Hospital's rooms private, as well as new Emergency Room, x-ray/imaging areas, outpatient rehab/therapy, front entrance, and lobby.

"The project that begins here today has been dreamt about and talked about for more years than some of us care to count - so in some ways, it is hard to believe this day has actually come," said Kathleen Griffiths, President and CEO of Chelsea Community Hospital. "This May is the two-year anniversary of our merger with Trinity Health and the Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. It is in very large measure because of this new relationship that this dream has become a reality."

Leaders from Chelsea Community Hospital and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, community leaders, local government, Hospital donors, and Medical Staff listened as Griffiths talked about the new facility and what it will mean to the Hospital and the community.

"This is truly a momentous occasion in the history of Chelsea Community Hospital," Griffiths said. "I have to admit I was humbled when someone told me recently that this project is one of, if not the largest, construction project in the history of Chelsea."

Representatives from Albert Khan, the architectural firm, and the construction management team of The Christman Company and AIM Construction were on hand to kick off the project.

"From the very beginning, both firms brought an understanding and appreciation for the unique nature of our hospital and our campus," Griffiths said. "Their collective talents are reflected in the wonderful design and renderings you see today. They have embraced the setting and designed a building that respects and enhances what we already have."

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System President and CEO Garry Faja spoke about the high scores CCH has received in quality, patient safety, patient satisfaction, employee engagement, and physician satisfaction.

"We are committed to supporting and preserving the special culture that Chelsea enjoys," Faja said.

David Killips, Chair of the CCH Board of Trustees, spoke of the benefits that the construction will have on the local community, including workers who will utilize local hotels, restaurants, and businesses. This added business, he said, "could not have come at a better time."

In addition, Killips mentioned the new technology and services at CCH as a benefit to patients and the community, enjoying cutting-edge medical care here in Chelsea.

Eric Skye, MD, CCH Chief of Staff, talked about the physician satisfaction at Chelsea and why so many physicians enjoy treating patients at CCH.

"The outstanding collaboration Chelsea Community Hospital's physicians and its staff and administration is difficult to find at other hospitals," he said. "Chelsea Community Hospital has always partnered with us to ensure that we can attract outstanding physicians and have the facilities we need to provide the care that people have come to expect here."

When it was time to turn the dirt, Griffiths, Faja, Skye, and Killips lined up with City mayor Jason Lindauer to do the honors. With many congratulations and memories shared, the focus of the event was truly on one thing - providing exceptional health care in Chelsea.

"We are very proud of the reputation that CCH enjoys for quality, safety and patient satisfaction," Griffiths said. "We know that these new state-of-the-art facilities will only enhance our ability to provide top-notch care for our patients and their families. In the end, that is what it's all about."

Major Construction Planned for Hospital - January 2011

It's an exciting time in the history of Chelsea Community Hospital, as preparations for its largest construction project ever are underway.

Though the Hospital has expanded, renovated, and improved upon its facilities several times since it opened in 1970, nothing of this caliber has been undertaken - until now.

The Hospital will undergo a transformation with a large-scale, multi-phased project that will commence this spring. The first phase, a two-story addition, will include a new 54-bed addition which will make all the Hospital's rooms private, as well as new Emergency Room, x-ray/imaging areas, outpatient rehab/therapy, front entrance, and lobby. As part of this project, much of the parking and driveways will be improved and redesigned.

The second phase involves renovation and improvement of the existing areas. After the addition and renovations are complete, a comprehensive Cancer Center will be built, which will include radiation oncology. The Hospital opened its new Infusion Center last fall, and the Cancer Center will allow CCH to expand upon those services and provide a full spectrum of cancer care, close to home.

Completion of the addition is expected in late 2012. Renovation of existing facilities will follow. The funds for the construction are a result of Chelsea's 2009 merger with Saint Joseph Mercy Health System.

"We are so excited to begin this new chapter in the history of Chelsea Community Hospital," said Kathleen Griffiths, President and CEO. "I think the community will be very pleased with the new facility and the comfort and convenience it will bring to our patients and visitors. It will enable us to continue our goal to provide the highest quality care to our patients."

The Hospital's theme for the new project is "Growing for You," featuring a photo of the trees on its scenic wooded campus. The public may see this theme around the hospital, and in an upcoming media campaign.

"We felt the 'Growing for You' theme was appropriate because we are, quite simply, growing to meet the needs of our community," Griffiths said. "The tree image was used because our beautiful campus is part of our identity, and will remain so with the new building. The growth and changes we will see will only enhance our patient care and enable us to do what we do best, in a state-of-the-art building."
