Second Remote Presence Telemedicine Stroke Robot Obtained
ST. JOSEPH MERCY ACQUIRES SECOND REMOTE PRESENCE TELEMEDICINE STROKE ROBOT
Port Huron, MI…Count to 100 and in that time two people will have suffered a stroke. That's 750,000 strokes a year. To provide the community with the most high-tech treatment for the emergent stroke victim, St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron (SJMPH) is pleased to announce it recently obtained a new remote presence telemedicine stroke robot through its affiliation with the Michigan Stroke Network (MSN). This second robot offers advances available nowhere else in the community for the treatment of stroke patients.
The self-propelled robot provides for one-to-one communication between stroke neurologists and neuroendovascular specialists located at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland, Pontiac, MI., and the clinical staff, patients and family members in the Emergency Department at SJMPH. New robotic enhancements include a telephone for directed conversations as well as an electronic stethoscope, otoscopes and ultrasound which can be connected to transmit medical data to the off-site, remote specialist directly providing care.
“It’s a great piece of technology that provides the most recent advances in stroke care along with the most highly-trained specialists,” explains Peter Karadjoff, FACHE, President and CEO of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. “Due to our affiliation with the Michigan Stroke Network, we are able to offer a service at St. Joseph Mercy not normally available in a community our size. This is just one more example of how we are continually working to elevate the health status of our region.”
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and disables more adults than any other condition. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked or bursts. The result can be as serious as brain damage or even death. With the availability of advanced specialists through the robot, patients can begin life-saving treatment locally and then be transferred to St. Joseph Mercy Oakland where their treatment and care is followed by the expert staff of a certified Primary Stroke Center.
This affiliation brings specialists and technology closer to home for stroke patients in the Blue Water area, increasing the chance for successful rehabilitation and ultimately saving lives. Since receiving the first telemedicine robot in October 2006, approximately 1,000 patients have been assessed utilizing the expertise of the stroke neurologists and neuroendovascular specialists through the MSN.
