Grosse Pointe Surgeon Honored for Improving Medical and Surgical Care in Ethiopia

Pontiac, Mich. — St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) Chief of Staff Ingida Asfaw, MD, FACS, received the prestigious American College of Surgeons/Pfizer 2013 Surgical Volunteerism Award for International Outreach at the annual American College of Surgeons (ACS) Board of Governors dinner in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 8.

Dr. Asfaw was honored for his commitment to improving medical and surgical care
in Ethiopia through the Ethiopian North American Health Professionals Association (ENAHPA), an organization he founded. He also presented a well‐received lecture on ENAHPA’s work during the American College of Surgeons' 99th Annual Clinical Congress, which was attended by more than 20,000 people this year.

The surgical volunteerism award is presented to recognize ACS Fellows who have dedicated a substantial portion of their career to ensuring the provision of surgical care to underserved populations. It is sponsored by Pfizer and Operation Giving Back (OGB), which was established by the ACS to recognize and encourage surgeons committed to humanitarian pursuits.

Dr. Asfaw is a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
