St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Joins With Ford Driving Skills For Life

Pilot Program Designed to Help Save Lives, Improve Skills of Teen Drivers

Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) and Ford Driving Skills for Life have launched a pilot program aimed at keeping teen drivers safe.

Ford Driving Skills for Life is a national safety initiative created by Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and a panel of safety experts to help young drivers improve their skills in key areas that are critical factors in teen vehicle crashes.  Vehicle crashes is the leading cause of death for American teenagers, claiming nearly 5,000 lives each year. Crash rates are highest during a teen’s first few hundred miles on the road.

The www.drivingskillsforlife.comwebsite offers training, tools and free resources to help teens become safer drivers.  The program focuses on skills in four key areas that are critical factors in more than 60 percent of teen vehicle crashes:

  • Hazard Recognition
  • Vehicle Handling
  • Space Management
  • Speed Management

Ford asked SJMO to partner in a pilot project to involve health care organizations that already see firsthand the often tragic outcomes of vehicle crashes involving teens.  In this pilot partnership, SJMO will help spread the word about this issue and the resources available through Ford Driving Skills for Life.

One measure of success will be the number of constituency hits on www.drivingskillsforlife.com and the number of people reached through SJMO newsletters and distribution of materials.  Officials at Ford and SJMO hope this pilot will serve as a successful model for other Trinity Health facilities.  Teens and their parents and grandparents are invited to visit the website to learn more about safe driving.
