National designation recognizes facilities delivering quality specialty care

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has named St. Mary Mercy Hospital as a Blue Distinction® Center for Knee/Hip Replacement.

The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care – and recently has been expanded to include more robust quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety as well as new cost-efficiency measures.

The Center for Joint Replacement at St. Mary Mercy provides a team approach to care, coordinating pre-surgical patient education and post-operative follow up care. Patients participate in an innovative rehabilitation program where they work in a team-like atmosphere with other patients and clinicians; patients also learn pain management techniques that enable them to rehabilitate quicker and more comprehensively within the first two days after surgery.

“St. Mary Mercy’s care has always focused on treating the whole person,” said Dave Spivey, president and CEO, St. Mary Mercy Hospital. “The Blue Distinction for our knee and hip replacement program recognizes the expertise of our surgeons and support staff in our comprehensive joint replacement program.”

St. Mary Mercy Hospital is among the four Saint Joseph Mercy Health System hospitals – including Chelsea Community Hospital, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor – as a Blue Distinction Center.

“Congratulations to Saint Joseph Mercy Health System on earning the Blue Distinction and Blue Distinction + designations for Hip and Knee Replacement and Spine Surgery. This designation, and the hospitals’ participation in initiatives that improve quality and safety in these areas, demonstrate a focus on continuous improvement yielding safer patient care,” says David Share, MD, senior vice president, Value Partnerships, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

Since 2006, consumers, medical providers and employers have relied on the Blue Distinction program to identify hospitals delivering quality care in Bariatric Surgery, Cardiac Care, Complex and Rare Cancers, Knee and Hip Replacements, Spine Surgery and Transplants. The selection criteria used to evaluate facilities were developed with input from the medical community and include general quality and safety metrics as well as program specific metrics.

Research confirms that the newly designated Blue Distinction Centers and Blue Distinction Centers+ demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers. Blue Distinction Centers+ also are more than 20 percent more cost-efficient. The program provides consumers with tools to make better informed healthcare decisions, and these results will enable employers, working with their local Blue Plan, to tailor benefits to meet their individual quality and cost objectives.
