Pediatrics

Errol Soskolne, M.D.The Department of Pediatrics is currently participating in several national multicenter trials.

  • Dr. Lisa Judge is leading a study of delivery room management and will evaluate three distinct approaches to stabilize and support premature infants at high risk of RDS
  • Dr. Gary Weiner is involved in a research project in collaboration with the University of Calgary to validate AAP Neonatal Resuscitation Program
  • Dr. Weiner is also active in many national professional organizations and was a neonatology delegate to the American Heart Association’s Inter- national Liaison Committee on Resuscitation Evidence Evaluation Conference as they prepare to develop new international guidelines for newborn resuscitation
  • Dr. Kim Tekkanat is doing collaborative research regarding the immune mediators involved in RSV infection
  • The department is participating in a national multicenter trial studying the management of infants with bronchiolitis
  • Dr. Judith Ivacko is participating in a multi-center study evaluating usage of Phenobarbital in neonates with seizures. Preliminary results are being presented at the Society for Pediatric Research in Washington, D.C.
  • The NICU is an active participant in the Vermont Oxford Neonatal collaborative, a multi-center research project involving over 400 centers across the country

Dr. Jeffrey Leflein is very actively involved in a number of different areas of research - many studies of which involve only a few centers around the country - with their primary focus being asthma, allergy, urticaria and eczema including:

  • A number of cutting edge studies including one protocol for the treatment of patients suffering from hereditary angioedema. Preliminary results of this study have been spectacular
  • A five-year study looking at the early treatment of eczema, which may delay or prevent subsequent long-term allergy and asthma development
  • Asthma studies looking at new modalities for the treatment of asthma such as the use of a monoclonal antibodies (Xolair) for patients with moderate to severe asthma
