Stroke continues to be a primary focus of research work in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Saint Joseph Mercy Health System has a reputation as a national leader in stroke research and treatment. Our physicians and staff will continue to build upon that national standing through our work with a number of studies related to stroke to improve outcomes, including:
- The effectiveness of a neuroprotective drug to prevent additional brain cell damage in acute stroke
- The combination of a lower dose of rt-PA, a clot-dissolving drug, combined with a platelet inhibitor drug for improved outcomes as opposed to the standard dose of rt-PA
- The safety of a neuroprotective agent in patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage
The department’s enthusiasm for research and improved patient treatment outcomes is not limited to stroke. Other research projects underway in the department include:
- A study of rapid sequence intubation, a medication assisted technique to establish an emergent airway in the pre-hospital phase
- A project that has gained national recognition in the development of prediction rules for identifying underlying injuries of the spine and spinal cord
- A study to compare two different methods of referral for follow-up preventive care after evaluation for chest pain, subsequent to two earlier related studies on cardiac risk factor assessment and modification in patients with chest pain discharged from the Emergency Observation Center
Emergency Medicine is also participating in a multi-center clinical trial on intra-cerebral hemorrhage and a study on a new method to detect pneumo-thorax. Also, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital is the only hospital named in a Center for Disease Control grant to study mild traumatic brain injury.
