What is Speech Therapy?
Also called Speech-Language Pathologists, speech therapists help people improve speaking, language, and thinking skills. At Chelsea Community Hosptial, services are provided for people age 14 and older with medically related problems such as stroke, head injury or other neurological conditions. Speech Therapy is coordinated with the patient, family physician and other therapies. Services are provided to outpatients, inpatients, and patients who are receiving home health care. All Speech-Language Pathology staff have masters degrees and the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP). Speech Therapy is part of the Neuro-Rehab/Chelsea Brain Injury Program and the inpatient Chelsea Rehabilitation program.
What services are provided?
- Speech therapy for difficulty pronouncing words or problems using the voice
- Language therapy, including work on:
- Understanding what other people say
- Saying words and sentences
- Reading comprehension
- Practicing written language
- Language-related functional activities such as talking on the phone and daily reading and writing
- Vision-related problems that affect reading and writing
- Cognitive-communicative (thinking skills) rehabilitation including work on:
- Keeping attention focused
- Figuring out solutions to daily problems
- Organization of daily life activities
- Memory for new information
- Dual tasking
